* No Yoga on Thursday 9 September

* FPMT & HBC Induction Workshop: (suitable for all)
10am - 4pm Saturday 11 September
Lunch: Bring a vegetarian plate to share
Come along and find out how our Centre works and how it fits into the 159 centres, monasteries and projects around the world that make up the inspiring organisation founded by the late Lama Thubten Yeshe and now directed by Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche.
* The day will be split in two sessions. The morning session will introduce FPMT and HBC with emphasis on the past, present and future of the organisation and our centre. Be prepared to be stretched by Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche's Vast Visions!! This will be an ideal time for everyone to learn about both FPMT and HBC and, for old as well as new students to connect more deeply with our Spiritual founders. The morning will involve both formal and informal presentations as well as hopefully a short film .
* Lunch will be a 'bring a vegetarian plate' affair and all being well, we'll relax outdoors with some tasty treats. It'll be a great time to share and meet new and old faces (figuratively of course).
* The afternoon session will focus on the important task of 'volunteering' at HBC and will commence with a reading from Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche. A general overview of what goes on at HBC and who does what will be combined with some specific induction material of interest to all volunteers and would be volunteers.
HBC is totally run of course by volunteers and we are very pleased to be able to offer the first of what we hope will become a regular series of volunteer workshops. So in short, there's something over the day for everyone. Please reserve time in your diary to join us in this celebratory event.
We looking forward to seeing you on the 11th September.
Warm wishes - John Waite and Dave Webb

John has asked me if I would coordinate Geshe Phuntsok's care, which I am very happy to do. So now I am asking for a team of helpers who would enjoy and benefit from a close association with Geshela. We cannot be sure about exactly what will be required until John has spoken to him after he arrives, but, the following are possible requirements:

1 Drivers - not just Airport transfers, but, to show Geshela our lovely city, and introduce him to our culture. He would also need driving to appointments, shopping etc

4 Laundry washing and ironing
5 Gardeners to help maintain the garden and to water plants when required
6 A lawn mower person (when Robert moves down to Bunbury) and possibly other little jobs

We are so fortunate to be given this opportunity, not only to earn merit, but, also to have this chance to serve our teacher on an on-going basis.

* Problem Solving in the 21 st Century: This Sunday’s Workshop with Ian Coghlan 10am-4.30pm Sunday 11 July

This workshop includes Sunday Meditation 10am-11am. Today’s world is changing at such a rapid rate and the pace of life seems to be ever increasing. With it can come the pressure of trying to do more and more as society places greater expectation upon us. There are also the challenges that life throws at us so unexpectedly such as untimely death or illness. Or do we feel less secure in a global world that has “global financial crisis” and extremism? When we have exhausted our ability to control certain aspects of our lives, we are left simply with our minds over which we do have control. Learn how we can train our minds to see, understand and even overcome problems, and feel that glimpse of peace that is possible even in the most serious of circumstances. Led by Ian Coghlan and suitable for all. Bring a vegetarian lunch to share. $55 ($50 for members).

* Lineage Masters in the Mahayana Tradition : Tues 13, 27, July 7.30pm-9pm

An important aspect of the Gelug tradition is ethics. Knowing that our teachings have a long and distinguished history, passing purely from generation to generation, inspires our trust and faith. Find out how those familiar names you hear all the time fit into the larger historical context. Emptiness is a major theme of the lineage teachers. Suitable for the more experienced student, but all interested students are welcome.

Bringing the relics to Perth and displaying the thangkas was also fulfilling Rinpoche’s wishes, that as many sentient beings as possible get to see them. The Relics Tour attracted over 3,000 people and raised $21,500 for the Maitreya project.

* Urgent Help for Sick Animals in Nepal:
We have some terrible news. Unfortunately a goat that Rinpoche recently rescued at the Animal Liberation Sanctuary, Nepal, has become sick with a deadly virus and it appears that most of the goats and sheep may now be infected too. Khen Rinpoche Geshe Lama Lhundrup, abbot of Kopan Monastery in Nepal, has advised that people do as many mantras of Medicine Buddha as possible.
The veterinarian is visiting daily and tests are being made to confirm which individuals may be infected. Medical treatment is underway. The animals are getting blessed water and Hayagriva pill powder every day. Geshe Thogme from Kopan Monastery is doing Medicine Buddha practice and mantras every day for them and he is also helping giving the water and the pills.
Go to our Death & Dying page for more information. Perhaps you could organise 1/2 hour at your Dharma centre to do a group recitation dedicated to the animals or even a Medicine Buddha puja. Any mantras recited at home, on your way to or from work or the shops, during your lunch-break or anywhere are most welcome!
Please, please join us to help our animal friends at this critical time! http://www.enlightenmentforanimals.org/site/
Students at Hayagriva Buddhist Centre were able to dedicate the Medicine Buddha Puja on Sat 19 June for the animals in Nepal.

It includes a teaching by Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche part of which says: 'Samsaric pleasure, which is dependent on external things, is only suffering. When one problem stops and another problem has started but is still small, we call it "pleasure." We project the appearance of pleasure and believe in that. That becomes the basis to give rise to the dissatisfied mind of desire. When the fulfilment of our desire is disturbed, anger and other disturbing thoughts then arise. Believing in these hallucinations becomes the foundation for ignorance, anger, attachment, jealousy, pride, and many other harmful thoughts, which then make our life unhappy and make us harm other sentient beings.'

• Vajrayana Institute hosted the opening of the Maitreya Heart Shrine Relics tour in Australia and New Zealand on May 7 – 9 . Christine Turley volunteered at this event and said: “ I strongly urge everyone who can volunteer at the Perth event to do so. The relics , for example from Shakyamuni Buddha, Kasyapa, Lama Tsong Khapa, Ribur Rinpoche, Lama Yeshe and more are a wonderful and heart moving experience. To be able to offer your time to see and help people benefit from viewing the relics, to receive a blessing or writing the Sanghata Sutra in gold ink is an experience to rejoice in." Hayagriva Buddhist Centre will be hosting the Maitreya Heart Shrine Relics Tour in Perth on 11- 13 June. If you can join our team of helpers, email Christine at the Centre on: welcome@hayagriva.org.au or phone 9367 4817. Golden Light Sutra Reading - Matt Whiston
Friday, November 13, 2009 (50 reads)

" Recitation of Golden Light Sutra: to fulfill Lama Zopa Rinpoche s wishes for the 500,000 animals that are going to be sacrificed during the Hindu festival (Ghaddimai) on 24 November in Nepal.
" Led by Matt Whiston:
1. Sunday 15 Nov at 2pm
2. Wednesday 18 Nov at 6.30pm
3. Sunday 22 Nov at 2pm
You do not have to recite the complete sutra, a part of it will be better than not at all. These prayers and practices are very powerful in these times not only for the liberation of the 500,000 animals in Nepal, but also for the spread of the Buddha Dharma, world peace and harmony. Great imprints are gathered for each chapter we recite.
Golden Light Sutra can be downloaded at http:/www.fpmt.org/teachers/zopa/advice/goldenlight.asp

Ganden Lha Gyama Commentary
Wednesday, March 18, 2009 (143 reads)

For three Wednesdays starting 8 April,
Ven Dondrub will give a commentary on the practice of Ganden Lha Gyama, literally Hundreds of Deities of Tushita Pure Land . Tushita is the Pure Land where Maitreya Buddha, the next teaching Buddha to manifest on earth, resides. Lama Tsong Khapa is also there, receiving teachings from Maitreya Buddha. In Tushita there are many bodhisattvas, including Atisha, and worldly gods.

Ven Dondrub said: To take the commentary, students should have taken refuge and be developing a connection with the Gelugpa tradition. It s good to commit to doing the practice once a month. Ganden Lha Gyama is especially wonderful. It sconcise, simple to do, yet contains all the elements of Guru Yoga practice.

The commentary on the practice will go through the text line by line, explaining what it means and how to do it, including the visualizations. It has the flavour of tantra without requiring tantric initiations, so it s a very good

introduction to tantric practice. Many people find it beneficial to have a regular practice to commit to as this gives some structure to their Dharma practice. Ganden Lha Gyama contains all the essential points, combining lam-rim, visualization, mantra recitat ion and Guru devotion.

Excerpt from the article in Hayagriva Buddhist Centre March-April newsletter (available on website)

Venerable Dondrub, Hayagriva's resident teacher, continues his Tuesday evening teaching on the Lam Rim Chen Mo 7.30-9.00pm
The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment by Tsonga-Kha-Pa (1357-1419). Completed in 1402, this masterpiece soon became one of the most renowned works of spiritual practice and philosophy in Tibetan Buddhism. Tsong-kha-pa's text has continued to be essential for any student of Buddhist thought who wants to put the teachings into practice. The central focus of the text is the development of the spirit of enlightenment (bodhicitta), the heart of the Mahayana tradition.

Compassion- the Heart of the Buddhist Path

His Holiness the Dalai Lama said "From my own limited experience I have found that the greatest degree of inner tranquility comes from the development of love and compassion."

The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater our own sense of well-being becomes. Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. This helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the ultimate source of success in life."

We are holding a 12 hour fast at the Centre next Saturday 30th August following the advice we have received from Kyabje Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, supporting the initiative of the Tibetan Government in Exile.

The purpose of the fast is to:

  • Celebrate freedom of expression in this country and encourage people to speak out in a non violent way when they see the need arise. This action also recommits us to the non-violent path.
  • Create merit for the long life of our teachers especially His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
  • Bring blessings for those that have suffered torture and death due to repression around the world, particularly in Tibet, or have created the acts of repression and torture.
  • Reduce our own defilements and create wisdom and compassion in the minds of the oppressed and oppressors.

Welcome Venerable Choden Rinpoche!
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 (665 reads)

Ven Choden Rinpoche

Venerable Choden Rinpoche is one of the greatest living masters of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in 1933 in eastern Tibet in a family of great practitioners and recognized at the age of 3 as an important reincarnate lama. From that age onwards, he began his studies in Buddhism. He took ordination with the great master Pabongka Rinpoche at the age of 6, and received many teachings from him.

At the age of 15, Rinpoche entered the monastery of Sera Je near Lhasa and over the next 14 years mastered all the philosophical teachings required for highest monastic title of Geshe Lharampa - a qualification that normally requires 30 years of study. When His Holiness the Dalai Lama completed his studies in 1959, Choden Rinpoche was one of the official examiners chosen from many thousands of monks to debate with His Holiness.

Illuminating the Path
Tuesday, November 13, 2007 (589 reads)

Ven DondrubVen Dondrub continues his historic first presentation of the entire Graduated Path to Enlightenment. The text for this wonderful exposition is His Holiness the Dalai Lama's commentary on Atisha'a "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment". As an example of the Dalai Lama's inspiring words, consider this extract from page 70. "Once we develop a deep conviction in the validity of the Buddha's teachings, we gain an admiration for and faith in the Buddha himself. Based on these considerations, we can recognise the validity of the Buddha's teachings on karma. It is on this basis that we then engage in the practice of ethical discipline, refraining from the ten non-virtuous actions." Ven Dondrub brings his deep understanding to help students understand and realise the teachings.
