Saka Dawa Pledge Tuesday, June 03, 2008 (53 reads)
Dear Friends of FPMT
We
are now celebrating the Month of Saka Dawa (June 4 to July 3), a
special month to make the Saka Dawa pledge, as the merit of virtuous
activities during this month multiplies by a million. Let's use this precious opportunity to accumulate merit, purify our karma and benefit many sentient beings. This
is also an easy way to do something for the long life of our Holy
Gurus- His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche and your own
gurus. It is very beneficial for prolonging our own lives by not contributing to killing. During Saka Dawa (Buddhas Enlightenment and Paranirvana) take one of the following pledges - To become vegetarian for this whole life To become vegetarian for one year To become vegetarian for the month of Saka Dawa Keep precepts for the month of Saka Dawa Keep precepts on all special days of Buddha and all precept days for the whole life Not to eat meat during all special days of Buddha (4 days in a year ) for one year We can also promise not to get angry during this month of Saka Dawa. It is most powerful to make this pledge on Saka Dawa day, which is June 19th, 2008 . Please use this link to make the pledge - http://FreeOnlineSurveys.com/rendersurvey.asp?sid

Rinpoche’s Request To Avoid The 10 Non-Virtues As Much As Possible Wednesday, July 04, 2007 (257 reads)
My most dear brothers and sisters, I thought to mention this.
In order for oneself and others to have a healthy life – I don’t mean healthy in the sense of diet and exercise, I am talking about a healthy life in the sense of one’s mind and attitude, the actions of one’s body, speech, and mind being positive, healthy, virtuous and pure – the main cause for this is to abstain as much as possible from negative actions, which result in suffering. This means actions done with negative mind, with ignorance, anger, attachment, and the self-cherishing thought. One way to do this is to abstain from the ten non-virtuous actions, which are killing, stealing, telling lies, and so forth. In Christianity there are also the ten commandments.

“When you are a Spiritual Program
Coordinator (SPC), you don’t have much time to yourself. It’s hard even to do a
retreat – instead you have to organize it, make sure it runs smoothly. On the
other hand”, says Claire over a delicious almond croissant, “the merit you
create by working for a Dharma centre is fantastic. It’s a credit card to
future lives.

Cosmic Revelations Friday, June 29, 2007 (227 reads)
I was sitting at a coffee shop in Claremont, waiting for my
sister to arrive for our weekly “catch up” session. I was reading the West Australian and saw an advertisement
for Venerable Robina Courtin. The titles of the talks were what peaked my
interest, especially “Don’t stay stuck!” Something like how to be rid of your
negative emotions… (thank you Claire, you saved my life!) Oh my God, I thought,
they certainly know what I need. I rang the phone number immediately to book my
place and left a message on answering machine. It was Jarka who called me back
and I raced in that day to pay. I wasn’t taking any chances! Jarka showed me
the range of free books and I took a copy of them all. I wanted to be well
prepared. I started to read a couple at once.

Going Down ... Hayagriva's Mortgage Friday, June 29, 2007 (16 reads)
When our current
premises were purchased in 2001 we had to borrow funds from the bank to settle
the transaction. Over the years a substantial part of the loan has been
repaid however, we still owe the bank
$112000. This incurs a monthly interest bill of $750 which amounts to more than
$9000 a year. Imagine what we can do with an extra $9000. The money can be
spent in a variety of ways to improve services to members eg. support a
resident geshe or help improve the building
which is now quite old. You may even have ideas of where the money can be spent
and we would love to hear that.
It becomes a matter of
priority for all of us to have the loan fully repaid as soon as possible. On
behalf of the committee I kindly request you to help by donating to our
building fund. Donations above $2 are tax deductible. Donations can be made by
direct transfer to Hayagriva Building Account, BSB 086283, account number
662394977 or by cheque made out to the Hayagriva Building Account. And don’t forget! Donations above $50
will automatically go into a random draw of a $50 Hayagriva gift voucher on 31st
July. The voucher can be redeemed for membership fees, course fees or in-house
shop purchases.
Thank you so much for your kindness and
generosity.

Treasurer

In the Beginning…1977-1996 Friday, June 29, 2007 (199 reads)
A lot of hard
work has gone into Hayagriva Buddhist Centre
and the effort continues, but what better work is there? Hayagriva
Buddhist Centre has evolved from a humble beginning, from
students contacting the Dharma through Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche in India and Nepal. The first FPMT teacher I
remember was Ven Konchog Domna, a resident nun at Tara House, who came to Perth around 1977. Ven
Gyatso visited some years later. About 1980, after the First Dharma Celebration
in India,
Julie Munroe bought a property at Northcliffe as a centre but maybe because of
its remoteness it never got off the ground.

Spontaneous Kindness Friday, June 29, 2007 (5 reads)
I thought to share with you some of the joy of the preperation for the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It has been inspirational to see how many different people from all walks of life have come forward to help make the tour by HHDL possible. People offering with great enthusiasm many skills and services to others. The great generosity of those who contributed to the fund to enable more people to listen to the talks; even though it didn't go ahead, enormous merit was created. That so many people can interact together in a fairly high pressure environment and do it so well leaves a sense that we can create the same in any situation we choose to in life. So many people want to make contact with HHDL: we need to enable more people to make the contact next time. John Waite - Director

Leap to Freedom Thursday, June 28, 2007 (205 reads)
If you had seen the film Little Buddha, at the beginning there
was an opening scene in which an old lama was telling a group of novice monks
the story about a goat and a priest. As the priest was about to cut the goat’s
throat it laughed and said that after 499 times being sacrificed and being
reborn as a goat, this time it will be reborn as a human being. Then the goat
began to cry and said that 500 lifetimes ago it was a priest and sacrificed
goats to the gods. The horrified priest dropped down to his knees and vowed
that from then on he would be the guardian of all goats.
